Tucker Mountain Snowshoe

break

Taking a break on Tucker Mountain

Nine hikers set forth from the end of Tucker Mountain Road in East Andover on an ideal winter morning in January.  Temperatures moderated a bit, we had some sunshine at the start and the snow showers held off until the end of our walk.

Frank Baker led us eastward on a bushwhack along the side of the ridge that forms Tucker Mountain. He pointed out tracks of deer, moose, mice, coyotes, and porcupines.  We explored a porcupine den and followed the urine-marked trail to their ‘dining hall’ in a stand of hemlocks.

We made it to the shore of Weeks Pond in 2 1/4 hours and enjoyed a small campfire while we ate lunch and later chopped two holes in the ice to measure the water’s depth.

Morgan Pond back country ski

On Saturday Jan 18th, Andy Hager led a fun group of x-country skiers up to Morgan pond. The group left from the Twin Lake Villa parking lot and skied up into Gile State Forest. The ski conditions were a bit icey and challenging on the 5-mile trip. But the challenges were met with ease. It was a beautiful day and everyone enjoyed visiting Morgan pond in the winter.
